My Passion for Swimming Instruction: The Story Behind Zwemschool De Winter Sport

Hello, my name is Shiva de Winter and I'm the proud owner of Zwemschool De Winter Sport. For 28 years now I've been active in swimming instruction, and I've had the honour of guiding thousands of children on their journey towards swimming skills and water safety. Swimming is more than just a sport; it's an essential life skill. In this article I'd love to share my passion for teaching swimming with you and explain why I founded Zwemschool De Winter Sport.

The Start of My Journey

My passion for swimming began at an early age. As a child you'd always find me in the water, so it wasn't long before I started helping out with lessons at the club where I'd learned to swim myself. Before long, I decided to turn my passion into my profession. After qualifying as a swimming instructor, I gained experience at various pools and swimming schools. During that time I noticed that many pools, and some swimming schools, focused on large groups, which meant children often didn't get the individual attention they needed. That inspired me to take a different approach.

Founding Zwemschool De Winter Sport

In 2007 I decided to start my own swimming school: Zwemschool De Winter Sport. My vision was clear: to offer swimming lessons in small groups, with plenty of personal attention. I believe every child is unique and that it's important to let them learn at their own pace. That's why at De Winter Sport we work with small lesson groups of 1-to-5 or 2-to-8, so every child gets the attention they deserve. Over the years the school has faced plenty of hurdles, but we've always kept our lessons going. Our pupils come first for me and for our entire team. I always have a plan B — sometimes right through to plan Z — and the same goes for our pupils if things don't quite click during the regular lessons.

No Waiting List, Start Right Away

At De Winter Sport we have no waiting list. That means children can start their swimming lessons as soon as they've enrolled. As a parent, I understand how important it is to be able to get going quickly, especially when your child is ready to learn to swim.

Weekly Diploma Tests

Another important part of our swimming school is the option to take diploma tests every week. This unique concept means children can earn their swimming certificate as soon as they're ready, without having to wait for a traditional test date. It keeps the children highly motivated and helps them achieve their swimming certificate more quickly.

Flexible Catch-Up Lessons

Flexibility is a core value at De Winter Sport. We understand that busy family life can sometimes get in the way. That's why we offer a credit system that makes it easy to make up missed lessons. This means no swimming lesson ever goes to waste, and parents have the freedom to plan lessons around their own schedule.

A Focus on Water Safety

Water safety is central to everything we do. Our lesson programme is designed so that children don't just learn to swim, but also develop the skills to help themselves and others in an emergency. This is reinforced by our collaboration with the Nederlandse Stichting Water- en Zwemveiligheid (NSWZ) and other partners, who contribute to the high quality of our swimming instruction.

A Positive Reputation

Over the past 17.5 years we've built up an excellent reputation, thanks to the many positive reviews from parents and children. Our approach has already helped thousands of children successfully and confidently earn their swimming certificate. That's something I'm enormously proud of, and it motivates me to keep delivering the best possible swimming lessons. I'm proud of my wonderful team, who are always there for our pupils, for each other and for the school, come rain or shine. Without this golden team, Zwemschool De Winter Sport simply couldn't exist.

The future of Zwemschool De Winter Sport looks bright. We continue to invest in our methods and facilities to make sure we keep meeting the highest standards in swimming instruction. I'm determined to help even more children make their swimming dreams come true and to keep growing our swimming school in Huizen and the surrounding areas such as Hilversum, Laren and Blaricum.
